JIRA Workflow for Release Notes

JIRA Workflow for Release Notes

— Nitin Beri

JIRA’s adaptable workflow makes the orchestration of tasks involved in creating and delivering Release Notes seamless.

By customizing workflows to align with specific requirements, JIRA enables efficient task management, clear delineation of stages, and assignment of responsibilities. Its reporting features ensure real-time visibility, fostering accountability and proactive management of potential delays.
The Release Notes work in JIRA can be linked to the main Engineering JIRA ticket used for their feature development. This stitching also helps them see the Release Notes status, making it easier for leadership to follow the progress.

Enhanced collaboration, deadline management, and the ability to drive continuous improvement through post-release analyses solidifies JIRA’s role in ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of Release Notes to the end-users.

Here’s a typical workflow for tracking documentation or Release Notes in JIRA.

All stages are self-explanatory, except for the following two:

  • Blocked: When there’s a delay in receiving content or review comments from the Product Manager or the engineer for specific Release Notes, the respective JIRA ticket is temporarily blocked. This action prompts notification to the relevant authority, ensuring timely attention and resolution.
  • Accepted: The Release Notes reach their terminal state as they are finalized and published for distribution.
