Generative AI Content: Disruptive or destructive for tech writers?
The influence of generative AI content on tech writers can be seen as both disruptive and transformative. Generative AI holds the promise of streamlining and automating specific facets of content creation, enabling tech writers to dedicate more attention to intricate and creative endeavors.
Maintaining an equilibrium between harnessing the capabilities of AI and safeguarding the distinct skills and insights of human tech writers is crucial in navigating this changing landscape. Various technical writers across different fields have shared their perspectives based on their experiences.
The Discussion
“Companies adapting to generative AI is definitely destructive to tech writers. A new breed of writers who are skilled into prompt engineering will be able to survive. Also, graphic designers too will have similar fate. That said, a special category of writers will be in demand. These writers bring out the depth that the generative AI is not likely to have. Plus, generative AI is “trained” to be apolitical and unbiased, which is its limitation. An application designed to solve a peculiar social issue (for example, substandard hygiene due to water shortage) will need more candid copy writing than the superfluous copy that the generative AI delivers.”

“In my opinion, Gen AI is an input driven tool. It provides the output based on the inputs. So manual intervention is a must as of now. We can't blindly use the Gen AI content into our documents. It is similar to the computer era, we can generate more data or content within a couple of minutes but we definitely need to verify. We can leverage the tool to generate content and improve our skills.”
Suman Kundu
“Gen AI is here to assist us like any other tool. It cannot replace humans and their creativity even in the long run. It may be a boon to startups who do have the budget to create a writer role; but when they grow up, they will hire a writer.”
Venkatesh
“It has its advantages and disadvantages. It can help the writers to great extent, which can prompt companies to hire less people and make use of Generative AI to complete all the tasks. But the AIs are still not well developed to completely replace humans. There are many of them being released at least one per week, which can be fine tuned and customized as per our requirement.”

“Gen AI content is beating us hands down in terms of the speed with which it throws up ideas, steps and bullet points.
In terms of quality, it has to cover a long way to reach how we write. Then too, it will always be a summary of what others wrote, and won't be original.”

“Disruptive hands down.”

“At this point it's time, it’s a fantastic enabler. How it unfolds over time is impossible to predict. At a point in life 99% of humanity had agriculture jobs and that got completely disrupted during the Industrial Revolution. People found different things to do so the same is expected to happen.”
Akshay Iyer
“Interesting thoughts are:
- Cars disruptive to bullock carts or rickshaws
- Mobile phone disruptive to books
- Laptops disruptive to PC
- Flats and societies disruptive to independent houses
It is called growth, moving forward or evolution. The sooner one gets adapted the better.
Generative AI is a reality and it will grow. So, pace up and start upskilling.”
Aman Talwar
“Enabler.... Never a competitor.”
Kelvin Lincoln
“Generative AI images are good for content.
But, for text, be aware of plagiarism. Also sometimes generate content which is not at all relevant to the subject. After all, AI is not Human Intelligence.”

“I would like to use AI tools for research and ideation first.
Once that first step is done, I would use the tool to create a brief outline that may include bullet points, headings and subheadings etc.
Once the basic framework is ready, now I will like to write and elaborate per my needs and taste.”
